Status Quo - 1+9+8+2+ (1982) - €10,00

posted by albumsonvinyl

1+9+8+2 (official title in other sources as 1982), is the fifteenth studio album by the English rock band Status Quo, released on 16 April 1982.

It was the first to include new drummer Pete Kircher, who had recently replaced John Coghlan, and also the first to credit keyboard player Andy Bown as a full member of the band; on the previous few releases he had merely been listed as a guest musician although he had long been an integral member in all but name.
Its release came shortly before the band appeared at a concert at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, in the presence of the Prince of Wales, and the resulting publicity probably helped to send it to an entry position of No. 1 in the album chart, making it their fourth and last No. 1 album.

It can be (and often is) argued that Status Quo entered the 1980s as little more than a parody of the l'il ol' boogie band from Butlins that once so-dominated the U.K. charts. "Rocking All Over the World," almost five-years-earlier, was the peak of their endeavors; everything since then was little more than a parody (at best), or a warmed-up revival (at most). 1+9+8+2 didn't alter that dour scenario. Dominated by a relatively sincere recounting of "I Love Rock and Roll," and the "Dear John" single that became the band's umpteenth hit (and umpteenth soundalike), it rattles along inoffensively enough, but you cannot compare it with any of the band's greatest triumphs -- just one more album from the band that's been going forever, and if it's already a part of your Quo collection, betcha don't play it too often!

Nevertheless, it received a lukewarm reception from fans. "Dear John", the first single and the only track not written by any of the band, reached No. 10 in the UK, but "She Don't Fool Me" stalled at No. 36.
1982 was the 20th anniversary of band members Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster first meeting each other, and the sum of the numbers 1+9+8+2 is 20 (shown as the Roman numerals 'XX' underneath the album title), hence the name of the album.

Van Halen - Diver Down (1982) - €10,00

posted by albumsonvinyl

Diver Down is the fifth studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen, released on April 14, 1982.

Five of the twelve songs on the album are covers, the most popular being the cover of "(Oh) Pretty Woman", a Roy Orbison song.
At the time, the record company thought it had a greater chance of a hit record if the album was composed of songs that were already successful. In retrospect, it turned out to be one of the Van Halen brothers' least-favorite albums, with Eddie stating "I'd rather have a bomb with one of my own songs than a hit with someone else's." However, at the time while he admitted to the pressure the band was put under to record it, he was able to tell Guitar Player (Dec. 1982) that it "was fun": "When we came off the Fair Warning tour last year [1981], we were going to take a break and spend a lot of time writing this and that.
Dave came up with the idea of, 'Hey, why don't we start off the new year with just putting out a single?' He wanted to do 'Dancing in the Streets.' He gave me the original Martha Reeves & the Vandellas tape, and I listened to it and said, 'I can't get a handle on anything out of this song.' I couldn't figure out a riff, and you know the way I like to play: I always like to do a riff, as opposed to just hitting barre chords and strumming.
So I said, 'Look, if you want to do a cover tune, why don't we do 'Pretty Woman'? It took one day.
We went to Sunset Sound in L.A., recorded it, and it came out right after the first of the year. It started climbing the charts, so all of a sudden Warner Bros. is going, 'You got a hit single on your hands.
We gotta have that record.' We said, 'Wait a minute, we just did that to keep us out there, so that people know we're still alive.' But they just kept pressuring, so we jumped right back in without any rest or time to recuperate from the tour, and started recording. We spent 12 days making the album... it was a lot of fun."
In addition to this, two of the original songs were around long before the album was made. "Hang 'Em High" can trace its roots back to the band's 1977 demos as "Last Night", which had the same music but different lyrics.
"Cathedral" was also nothing new, being played in its current form throughout 1981 with earlier versions going back to 1980. Additionally, "Happy Trails" had been recorded for their 1977 demos as a joke.

The album cover artwork displays the "diver down" flag used in many US jurisdictions (which indicates a SCUBA diver is currently submerged in the area).
Asked about the cover in a 1982 interview with Sylvie Simmons (Sounds, June 23, 1982), David Lee Roth said it was meant to imply that "there was something going on that's not apparent to your eyes. You put up the red flag with the white slash. Well, a lot of people approach Van Halen as sort of the abyss.
It means, it's not immediately apparent to your eyes what is going on underneath the surface." The back cover of the album features a photo by Richard Aaron of Van Halen on stage at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida that was taken on October 24, 1981 as they concluded a set opening for The Rolling Stones.

10CC - Deceptive Bends (1977) - €10,00

posted by albumsonvinyl

Deceptive Bends is the fifth studio album by rock band 10cc, released in 1977.
The departure of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme in 1976 to form Godley & Creme almost ended 10cc. However, Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman continued to run the band with the assistance of drummer Paul Burgess who already worked with 10cc acting as second drummer to Kevin Godley on tour.

Stewart recalled: “I had a big challenge ahead of me to prove to the record world that we were not just 5cc, as some of the British media had graciously called us.
The music was simpler than some of the previous 10cc albums, it was far more direct, streamlined and positive.
The whole album was recorded very (in our terms) quickly. I was on a mission, and flying higher and faster than I had ever been before, and I knew by then that we had a very strong album. The new songs played a big part in the equation of course, I was out to prove also that we could write a hit album without Kevin and Lol … we did!”

Godley and Creme were still band members early in this album’s history. The band’s original line-up debuted a live version of “Good Morning Judge” at the Knebworth Festival on 21 August 1976, and also did studio work on an early version of “People in Love” referred to as “Voodoo Boogie”. “Voodoo Boogie” featured a more offbeat arrangement and prominent backing vocals by Creme, but the track was considered “awful” when assembled, and Godley and Creme left the group shortly thereafter.
The official versions of “Good Morning Judge” and “People in Love” were performed by Stewart and Gouldman alone, with the help of a few session musicians.

Deceptive Bends also produced a pair of notable hits for the group: “Good Morning Judge” told the comical tale of a career criminal over a hook-laden, surprisingly funky pop backing while “The Things We Do for Love” was an irresistible Beatles pastiche that showcased 10cc‘s mastery of pop vocal harmonies.
“People in Love,” a surprisingly straightforward ballad built on a gorgeous string arrangement, also became a modest chart success

The cover design was provided by Hipgnosis. The title of the album was taken from a sign warning of dangerous curves in the southbound A24 between Leatherhead and Dorking in Surrey; the sign is no longer there.
