"Backstage Pass (1980)" is a celebrated double live album by the Little River Band, capturing their peak era with high-energy performances of hits like "Reminiscing" and "It's a Long Way There".
It showcases a blend of soft rock and pop, often featuring an orchestra for a rich, live sound.
The album is highly regarded for its superior audio quality and for showcasing the band's, tight, harmony-driven, and impressive live
The album was released in United States as a double album in March 1980, including the group's next live album, Live in America.
Excellent live performances from a woefully underrated rock band of the 70’s and early 80’s.
Sure they had the great soft rock hits (Reminiscing, Lonesome Loser, Lady, Take it Easy On Me etc.) but they were also a super tight band that rocked pretty hard with the best of their peers during the time.
Great songwriting collaborations between the members too. Sadly, no original members survive in the current lineup of the band that continues to tour under the LRB name.
This is, without fear of exageration, wonderful. Several of the superb songs from the first three albums are present here, kicking of with what I still believe is one of the greatest roick songs ever written by anyone at any time period - that being "It's A Long Way There".
This alone, be it the original stusio version or this live version, is worth the cost of purchase on its own.
It is with a couple of tracks new to me (until my rediscovering) that represent the real jewels here.
"Fall From Paradise" and "light Of Day" show off all that is great with the band - the wonderful musicianship, the great songwriting and those vocal harmonies - they are both spine-tingling in their execution.
It wasn't only about their abilty to sing harmonies together. The three main vocalists could all hit the mark - all had good range and sustain and that in itself is quite remarkable.
Hell, even the missus was prompted to extol their virtues - and that is a once in a blue moon moment.
The second album, "Live In America", is not quite to the same standard in terms of material but is pleasing in that there was no overlap in material. Odd, given the two album's recording dates.
The only gripes are miniscule. The omission of "Happy Anniversary" and the use of those horrible synthetic drums of the period mar it ever so slightly. This amounts to what is a re-discovery of a great little band (pun intended).
Despite their occasional forays into boogie and their apparent country rock influences, they were very, very good and, at times, exceptional.
The latter certainly applies to their live performances, where their tendency to rehearse and rehearse and then rehearse some more pays rich dividends.
