Mahogany is a 1975 American romantic drama film directed by Berry Gordy and produced by Motown Productions.
The Motown founder Gordy took over the film direction after British filmmaker Tony Richardson was dismissed from the film. Mahogany stars Diana Ross as Tracy Chambers, a struggling fashion design student who rises to become a popular fashion designer in Rome.
Mahogany was the second original motion picture soundtrack by Diana Ross, following her 1972 release Lady Sings the Blues.
The soundtrack included the single "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)", which peaked at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976.
The single's B-side, "No One's Gonna Be a Fool Forever", was taken from Ross's Last Time I Saw Him album of 1973.
The soundtrack reached #19 in the USA and sold over a million copies worldwide.
Still, the movie produced one of her biggest and best hits with "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)," a Goffin-Masser tune that was nominated for an Oscar.
It's a great song, but most Ross fans will rather pick it up on a collection than Mahogany -- Original Soundtrack, since it is the only vocal track on an otherwise monotonous album of instrumental incidental music.
The Mahogany soundtrack features many nice numbers that equal or beat the title track. The Jermaine Jackson number "She's the Ideal Girl", which is the only other track with complete vocals beside the "Theme."
"Let's Go Back to Day One" also features some vocals. These are both early disco songs – I like this phase of disco music: the rhythm backings still weren't only mechanical four on the floor.
However, "Erucu" is almost that, and while it is interestingly monotonous, it even feels like a super early house performance! "You Don't Have to Be Alone" and "Feeling Again" are yet other OK numbers, while the jazzy tracks are a welcome addition. The rest feels less worthy, especially the repeated main themes.
