Annie is a 1982 American musical comedy-drama film based on the 1977 Broadway musical of the same name by Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan, which in turn is based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip created by Harold Gray.
Directed by John Huston and written by Carol Sobieski, the cast includes Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry, Geoffrey Holder, Edward Herrmann, and introducing Aileen Quinn in her film debut as the titular character. It is the first film adaptation of the musical.
Set during the Great Depression in 1933, the film tells the story of Annie, an orphan from New York City who is taken in by America's richest billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. Principal photography took place for six weeks at Monmouth University in New Jersey in 1981.
Annie is a soundtrack album for the 1982 film of the same name. All lyrics are written by Martin Charnin; all music is composed by Charles Strouse.
The soundtrack to John Houston's movie adaptation of the Broadway blockbuster Annie is fitfully entertaining, featuring good versions of "Tomorrow," "It's the Hard-Knock Life," and "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile."
Even though the glossy production sounds good and most of the vocalists sound good, the soundtrack isn't as consistent or rich as the original cast recording.
"Orphanage" was changed to "foster kid" in Hard Knock Life lyrics, but it doesn't ruin the song. It's annoying more than anything, because it's not clear why the change was made. The vocals aren't as strong and as beautifully sounding as they were in the comparative songs of the 1982 Annie movie.
The 1982 cast was clearly more talented than this cast in terms of a musical type movie. But what I like about this soundtrack is that it's relevant to today's time. For example, Your Never Fully Dressed without a Smile had a vaudeville feel in the 1982 movie, and isn't applicable today, so a change was required.
Also we have to keep in mind that the 1982 movie took place during the Great Depression era in the 1930s, and some songs are just not applicable today.
Therefore, this soundtrack added some pretty good songs. There's a good song featuring New York City (The City's Yours), and there's "Opportunity", and "Who am I" immediately stands out.
