Flesh and Blood (stylised as Flesh + Blood) is the seventh studio album by the English rock band Roxy Music, released on 23 May 1980 by E.G. Records.
The album was the band's first without drummer Paul Thompson, whose departure reduced Roxy Music to a core trio of singer Bryan Ferry, saxophonist Andy Mackay and guitarist Phil Manzanera, augmented by session musicians.
"Flesh and Blood" anchored the resuscitation of Roxy Music's career by its polish and the sense of elegance that was missing from the previous year's 'Manifesto'.
But Roxy Music Part 2 had become merely a showroom showcasing the vocal stylings of Bryan Ferry, which had that distinctive suaveness about it as well as having a quality that can just soar above the accompaniment.
The rest of the band were now just playing second fiddle to Ferry's crooning. Yet this move away from the band's roots of eclectic art/glam rock to the safe commercial sound of 'Flesh and Blood' was incredibly popular with sales for this album and its 1982 follow up outselling all the previous albums put together.
'Flesh and Blood' is a collection of really nice songs that all run well together, and which are all under-pinned by Ferry's distinct delivery but this smooth and svelte sound of 80s 'Roxy Ferry' served only to highlight how one-dimensional their material had become.
Here there would be no “Out of the Blue” or “In Every Dream Home a Heartache”, even the singles (Over You, Oh Yeah and The Same Old Scene) seemed to have none of the vitality of 'Virginia Plain' or the mystique of 'Do the Strand'.
Fair enough bands and their sounds evolve over time, its just that with Roxy Music the expectations were a little higher than radio friendly ditties !
The stand out track on this collection is 'My Only Love' which is classic Ferry muling on about lost love. Its etherealism soars higher than normal.
The album was preceded by the single "Over You", a No. 5 UK hit.
Two more hit singles followed: "Oh Yeah" (UK No. 5) and "Same Old Scene" (UK No. 12.
Flesh + Blood also included two cover versions: the Byrds' "Eight Miles High" and Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour".
The latter was released as a single in some territories. In addition, the album's title track along with the aforementioned "Over You" and "Eight Miles High" peaked at No. 46 on the Billboard dance charts.
