John Watson Jr. (February 3, 1935 – May 17, 1996), often known professionally as Johnny "Guitar" Watson, was an American musician.
A flamboyant showman and electric guitarist in the style of T-Bone Walker, his recording career spanned 40 years, and encompassed rhythm and blues, funk and soul music.
Watson recorded throughout the 1950s and 1960s with some success.
His 1954 instrumental single "Space Guitar" was the first of his recordings to showcase his electric guitar playing. His creative self-reinvention in the 1970s, with funk overtones, saw Watson have hits with "Ain't That a Bitch" and "Superman Lover" and"A Real Mother for Ya".
Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "That's What Time It Is" album, released in 1981, showcases his signature blend of funk, blues, and soul.
The album is known for its danceable grooves, witty lyrics, and Watson's distinctive guitar playing and vocals.
It's a strong example of his mid-career sound, bridging the gap between his earlier blues work and the funkier style he became known for later.
The album is built on a foundation of funky basslines, strong rhythms, and catchy horn arrangements, making it ideal for dancing.
While not solely a guitar showcase, Watson's playing is a prominent feature, with his signature tone and bluesy licks adding a distinctive flavor to the music
"That's What Time It Is" is seen as a key album in Watson's evolution, showcasing his move towards a more modern funk sound while retaining elements of his blues roots.
"That's What Time It Is" is a fun and funky album that represents a strong period in Johnny "Guitar" Watson's career. It's a great introduction to his music for those unfamiliar with his work and a satisfying listen for longtime fans.
