Ashford & Simpson had come close to exhausting their creative quotient by the mid-'80s.
Simpson still sang effectively, and Ashford harmonized and contrasted her nicely, but they'd stated and restated both their own situations and any variations on it four albums before.
As a result, the feeling that you've heard it all once too often permeates this album.
Not that their fans wouldn't want to listen once more, nor that what they had to say wasn't at times compelling; it's just that it no longer was special.
High-Rise is a studio album by American vocal duo Ashford & Simpson, released in 1983 on Capitol Records. It was their second album for Capitol.
This album from 1983 is Ashford and Simpson perfection. A perfect mix of uptempo tracks with some glorious ballads. The title track HIGH RISE is a sublime dance trace with an irresistible beat and of course the glorious harmonies of our married duo. They seem to be having so much fun.
The album peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard R&B albums chart and No. 84 on the Billboard top albums chart. Three singles were released.
The album's title track peaked at No. 17 on the Hot Black Singles chart, "It's Much Deeper" and "I'm Not That Tough" charted 45 and 78 respectively on the Hot Black Singles chart.
