Mahalia Jackson - Newport 1958 (Reissue 1972) (vinyl Lp) - €10,00

These recordings show just how emotional her voice was and how she could whip up an audience into a spiritual frenzy leaving no doubt that her hymns were not just for the religiously devout but for anyone who can feel the groovin’ soul that Mahalia belted out effortlessly.
The tracks range from gospel to traditional but Mahalia delivers the goods like they all her own. Very impressive live performance.
Perhaps the most heavenly music put to wax. Utterly gripping… Mahalia’s voice is unlike any other — powerful and makes heads turn. The dramatics of the piano also uphold this recording to new heights.
The recording has melancholia permeating through each track, especially cuts like “A City Called Heaven,” which blows a hurricane through your pretenses about gospel music.
The further you get into the album, the further Mahalia’s voice takes over your mind until you process nothing except the warbles of Gospel’s queen.
There are more traditional, jumpy cuts like “Didn’t It Rain,” that are utterly infectious in their passion. I cannot believe I only knew Mahalia Jackson through “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” She must have one of the best voices in music, ever.
Furiously exhilarating and groovy gospel sung by the almighty Mahalia. “I’m on My Way”, “It Don’t Cost Very Much” and “Didn’t It Rain” are like three pearly sunrises on a piece of string driven along by a piano that is as lively as a forest during spring and an organ that is booming with sheer joy and enthusiasm, not to mention Jackson’s spine-tinglingly energetic vocal delivery and fervent hand-claps.
The finest moment is “I’m Going to Live the Life I Sing About in My Song”, an excellent ballad that lifts Mahalia Jackson to the same league as Billie Holiday.
