The Fixx are a rock band from London, England, founded in 1979.

Calm Animals is the fifth studio album by British band the Fixx, released on February 7, 1989. 

The Fixx attempted to redefine themselves as a guitar-driven mainstream rock band for 1988's Calm Animals, their first album for RCA Records. Although their stylistic revamping isn't embarrassing, it isn't executed well, particularly because the group has failed to write any memorable songs.

The Fixx revamp their sound but lyrically love and environmental concerns are still at the forefront. Although the harder edged sound is worthy of attention on several hard rocking cuts (I’m Life, Driven Out, Shred Of Evidence, and the title cut) it is two ballads (“Precious Stone” and “The Flow”) which harkens back to the Fixx of old. “Precious Stone” ranks among their top songs ever. 

Overall a well rounded in step with the times release.

To some extent the nature of atmospheric synthpop allows for a more freeform structure; melody subsumed by ambient sound.

By beefing up that sound The Fixx have focused attention on their lack of substance. Too often does Calm Animals sound like a directionless Simple Minds.

The single "Driven Out" gave them a No. 1 song on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in early 1989.

The single "Precious Stone" reached the top 25 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
