Thelma Houston - The Devil In Me (1977) (vinyl Lp) - €7,00

posted by ad-vinylrecords

The Devil in Me is the sixth album by Thelma Houston released in 1977.
While this album did not duplicate the commercial success of the Any Way You Like It album, it became a modest commercial success, peaking at No. 64 in the US album chart/No. 29 R&B.
The lead single was the R&B and Club/Dance chart hit, "I'm Here Again".
"I Can't Go On Living Without Your Love" was issued as a double-sided 12" single back-to-back with Diana Ross' "Your Love Is So Good to Me".

Thelma's "The Devil In Me" album is a just as stellar as her 1976 album except that it didn't contain a song that could match her giant hit "Don't Leave Me This Way".
The follow-up single to that one was an ill-advised choice, the standard "If It's The Last Thing I'd Do".
Tamla/Motown made another ill-advised choice when they had Thelma record Michael & Brenda Sutton's "I'm Here Again" which in itself was a fine record - but it was surprising that Gamble/Huff and producer Hal Davis didn't sue for plagiarism as the song was such a rip-off of her big hit.
Thelma later said in an interview that she'd been unhappy with the decision to record "I'm Here Again".
Still, it did provide her with a seizable R&B hit.
The Sutton-couple also wrote & produced "It's Just Me Feeling Good" while Brian Holland (of Holland-Dozier-Holland fame) took care of the album's second single "I Can't Go On Living Without Your Love" which unfortunately did nothing. "Triflin'", "Give Me Something To Believe In" and the title track are equally solid up-tempo material while Thelma shines on the glorious ballads "Memories", "Baby I Love You Too Much" and the closing track "Your Eyes".

The album was arranged by Kim Richmond, James Anthony Carmichael, Gordon C. Berg, Greg Wright, Michel Rubini and Michael Omartian. The cover photograph was by Tom Kelley.
