KC and the Sunshine Band is the second studio album by KC and the Sunshine Band.
The record was produced by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch and was released in July 1975 on the TK label.
With the release of the self-titled second album KC and the Sunshine Band in 1975 came the group’s first major U.S. hit with “Get Down Tonight” It topped the R&B chart in April and hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August. “That’s the Way (I Like It)” also became a number one hit in November 1975 and the group did well at the 1976 Grammy Awards.
The song “Boogie Shoes” also subsequently became a hit in early 1978 after being included on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
A lot of KC and the Sunshine Band is more or less disco music, but there are a few exceptions.
“I’m So Crazy (‘Bout You)” is a great uptempo pop soul song, close to the Motown sound and feel. “What Makes You Happy” is a nice funky number.
“Boogie Shoes” is one of the lesser numbers in my opinion, it represents a kind of uptempo R&B.
It happened that this track was chosen to represent KC & the Sunshine Band in Saturday Night Fever; and perhaps that is why I didn’t expect so much of this album. Still, “Boogie Shoes” is OK and I can stand the slightly sloppy vocals on “I Get Lifted” as well, though you can be sure that KC and the Sunshine Band is not one of the very best soul (or disco or pop) albums of the 1970s.
But it is nice, it has some certain historical value, and it features a few great little songs – one of those definitely being “That’s the Way I Like It”, a number which can still make a few younger generation clubbers sing along on the dance floor.
