Behind the Lines is David Knopfler's second solo album after leaving Dire Straits. It was released in 1985 and was dedicated to "Anna with love".
David’s second album from 1985 was a more polished affair than his debut. Synths and Linn drums scaffold the efforts of the best session players of the era.
The songs are pretty catchy making it a satisfying listen from start to finish. His voice is far raspier here and more energetic without sounding contrived or forced.
The basslines on the album are pretty tasty too and feature slick hired gun Pino Palladino and Taif Ball. The opening Heart To Heart is a dated ugly mash of synthpop with one foot on the dance floor and the other in TV advert land.
It is followed by the even uglier Shockwave which would make a great theme to a McGiver knock off. With these two pigs out of the way The Missing Book, Double Dealing and I’ll Be There are far more like the songs he’s really good at but the albums highlight Prophecies is one of the most ambitious songs he’s ever written with a great arrangement and a disturbing tale of woe. It’s a little reminiscent of some of Chris DeBurg’s long and dramatic storytelling songs.
Things cool with Stone Wall Garden, then Sanchez blasts along taking us to an acoustic love song Sunset, which gently ends the album.
Overall the lyrics are a riddle with biblical themes and a lot of mumbo jumbo namesakes, but that’s just secondary to the music. David Knopfler’s solo career was always pretty low key and obviously overshadowed by older brother and guitar whiz Mark knopfler, and while he does possess the songwriting ability to write rock, pop, AOR staples of above average quality, he’s unfortunately always going to be seen as an ex Dire Straits member, (actually a founder member) trying to impress but overshadowed by that very juggernaut he was once a part of.
