Too Tough is the fourth studio album by the recording artist Angela Bofill, released on January 2, 1983.
This was her second release through Arista Records, with Narada Michael Walden again serving as joint music producer.
"Too Tough" is very enjoyable Pop/Soul album that's not that marred by early 80's production standards as her next LP "Teaser". Songs like "Accept Me (I'm Not a Girl Anymore)" or "I Can See It In Your Eyes" are perfect Quiet Storm ballads and show Angela Bofill's incomparable vocal talents.
Even danceable title track (the biggest hit off of the album) may be pleasant surprise for some listeners. It's not groundbreaking music but who said that only groundbreaking music can be satisfying?
With the release of Too Tough Angela Bofill shows yet again what a great vocalist she is. Her phrasing is immaculate. She is a charismatic performer her voice is sassy and sweet. Ideal for the material she has to work with.
She adds that extra human element that eighties R&B music needs.
The musicians, including future Prince collaborator Sheila Escovedo, provide great backing. Particularly on the gorgeous 'Tonight I Give in' where the nuanced musicianship supports Angela Bofill's wonderful voice rather than fighting for attention.
This is some of the best stuff Angela Bofill recorded up to this point in her career. The contemporary eighties production doesn't distract. The more uptempo tracks really work well and of course the ballads really let Angela Bofill shine.
Too Tough combines the past jazz influences with pop, I Can See It In Your Eyes & Rainbow Inside My Heart to pure pop remake Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing duet with Boz Scaggs.
Her ballads were becoming her strong point with songs like her hit Tonight I Give In and the gorgeous Accept Me (I'm Not A Girl Anymore). The title track is the only dance track though Love You Too Much reminds me of her previous hit Something About You.
