Here Through Midland is the second album by Cock Robin and was released in 1987.
Again it was a big success in continental Europe as their first eponymous album, reaching the Top 10, but was largely ignored in the United States where the album reached only #166 in the Billboard 200. The single "Just Around the Corner" proved to be the biggest hit in Europe, and it remains a staple on adult contemporary and pop music stations in France.
Indeed it is a more consistent one than their debut, it's easier on the ear and there's no production-overkill,
just a very pleasant flow.
Only 2 people were left of the original line up, the core duo of singers Peter Kingsbery and Anna LaCazio.
The bulk of the material comes from Peter's pen, and there's a whole lot of infectious energy coming unfiltered through the speakers, right from the soul.
It's lush and melodic with delicate rhythm-work ( mostly mid-tempo ), and, as I once said:
"nobody is writing about love like Peter Kingsbery does", which means I can very much relate to his words in a personal way.
"The Biggest Fool of All" is one of the best songs ever, but there's no stinker on the album anyway,
with "I'll Send Them Your Way" ( perhaps a bit schmaltzy) and "Coward's Courage" ( rather overblown ) being the weakest points.
"El Norte" is perfect pop, "Another Story" is hauntingly beautiful with its tremendous vocal-lines, the title track is perfectly capturing a man gasping for air on a long ride home.
And there's "Just Around the Corner", a well deserved hit-single in its time and perhaps the best remembered song from the album.
I wish that nowaydays' pop-music were as special as this. Peter Kingsbery's writing has always been devoid of a formula, he was really searching for the extraordinary, and it's stunning how often he still hit the nail and managed to attract a wider audience in a contemporary way.
It's an underrated treasure of the 80's, not a soulless product.
