Blue Kentucky Girl is the sixth studio album by American country music artist Emmylou Harris, released in 1979.
The album features Harris delving into more traditional country than the country-rock sound of her previous releases.
Songs include work by Willie Nelson and Gram Parsons. Rodney Crowell's "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" featured harmonies by Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, and came out of the women's ill-fated 1978 recording sessions, where they first attempted to record a "trio" album (nearly a full decade before they actually succeeded in doing so).
Another classic, focusing Blue Kentucky Girl on classic country music, only through the impeccable song selection, tasteful production, and exceptional performances, results in one of Emmylou Harris' best records. Her voice sounds as good as ever and the more traditional sound compared to previous releases works for this material.
There's a great version of the Louvin Brothers' "Everytime You Leave" featuring Don Everly, another Gram Parsons cover with "Hickory Wind", the beautiful ballad "Beneath Still Waters" and Willie Nelson's "Sister's Coming Home" gives the album a fine opener.
There's also a more prominent role for fiddle player Ricky Scaggs.
What the album lacks is a true standout track like "Pancho and Lefty", "Defying Gravity", "One Of These Days" or "For No One". But Harris' choice of material remains excellent, the Hot Band's playing is always impressive and the guest appearances by Tanya Tucker, Sharon & Cheryl White and the aforementioned Don Everly work very well.
A very enjoyable album that's I'd rank just behind her other releases from this era, but miles ahead of most of her 80s work.
"Beneath Still Waters" became Harris' fourth No. 1 hit; covers of the Drifters' 1960 hit "Save the Last Dance for Me" and the album's title track (originally recorded by Loretta Lynn) were top ten hits on the US country charts.
Blue Kentucky Girl won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
In 2006, the album ranked No. 20 on CMT's "40 Greatest Albums in Country Music".
